Periodontal Maintenance
Patients with history of periodontal disease will receive periodontal maintenance every 3-4 months which includes the removal of soft and hard deposits from above and below the gum line and antibiotic placement if needed.
Deep periodontal pockets might not shrink to a healthy level with a single Scaling and Root Planning procedure. In order to maintain the health of the gums and to halt the spread of periodontal disease, more frequent cleanings are needed. Topical numbing gel might be applied during periodontal maintenance for patient’s comfort.
What differentiates periodontal maintenance from regular prophylactic cleaning is the presence of >4mm periodontal pockets and a history of periodontal disease.
INSURANCE COVERAGE:
Virtually all dental plans provide coverage for periodontal maintenance. While the frequency allowed varies, the majority of plans will cover periodontal cleanings every 3 months. Typical coverage is 80% – 100%. While some insurance plans will restrict the frequency of periodontal cleanings to two or three times per year, it is important to recognize that the out of pocket cost of a periodontal cleaning is very small relative to its long-term benefit in avoiding more aggressive treatment such as periodontal surgery or the replacement of lost teeth. The office of Dr. Mazen Natour will handle all insurance matters for its patients. Please call us if you have any questions about your coverage.
